What if I don't have a bank account?

Opening an account at a bank or credit union is simple. Many let you open an account online, and some don’t require you to have a social security number.

To open a bank account, most banks will ask for the following documents:

  • A photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport
  • A social security number or, if you don’t have one, an individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN)
  • Proof of address. This can be your rental lease, water bill or similar document with your full address

Learn how to open a bank account if you do not have a SSN or ITIN.

In some cases, you may also need a minimum deposit amount, which varies, but is generally around $25.

If you don't want a bank account, there are a few other ways you can receive your funds.

Such as:

  • Create a free PayPal account if you don’t already have one, and use that account information (or use an existing account)
    • Important Note: You need a SSN or ITIN to create a PayPal account
    • Once you create an account, you can enable direct deposit to receive funds
  • Sign up for a free NETSPEND account and use the debit card
    • Important Note: You need a SSN or ITIN to create a NETSPEND account
    • Once you create an account, you can enable direct deposit to receive funds
  • Order a Cash Card (it's free) and provide that account information
    • Important Note: You need a SSN or ITIN to create a CashApp account
    • Once you create an account, make sure you enable direct deposit, not doing so can create a delay in receiving funds
