Where can I open a bank account if I do not have a SSN or ITIN?

Below is a list of banks that allow individuals without a Social Security Number or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) to open a bank account.

  • Important Notes:
    • To open an account with any of the listed banks, you must contact the bank directly.
    • UpTogether does not provide support for opening bank accounts and ultimately the bank decides if an account can be opened. 
    • Some of these banks may be state/city-specific or have other requirements not listed here. It is best to contact them directly to confirm you are able to open an account. 
  • Bank Of America
    • Lobbies are open
    • Plastic barriers between clients and banker
    • Everyone is required to wear masks
      • To open an account:
      • 2 forms of ID needed
      • One picture ID like a passport
      • The other can any other form of ID or even a bill
      • A minimum deposit of $25 is required

  • BBVA
    • To open an account:
      • Tell employee at drive through you would like to open a new account
        • You will be directed to the parking lot where you speak with a banker by phone
        • When documents need to be exchanged or signed the banker will instruct you as to how.
      • Foreign nationals need to bring their passport (I would bring another form of ID to verify your identity, just in case)
      • A minimum deposit of $25

  • Wells Fargo
    • To open an account:
    • Call the branch to make sure you do not need to set up an appointment with a representative.
    • Bring two forms of ID
      • One picture ID
      • Any other form of ID featuring an expiration date
      • A minimum deposit of $25 is required

  • Chase 
    • Call to see which branches are open or to make an appointment by phone
    • To open an account:
      • Need passport as the primary form of ID
      • Need a consulate card, bill, bank statement, or pay stub as proof of address and as a secondary form of ID
      • A minimum deposit of $25 is required

  • UFCU
    • To qualify for membership you must 
    • Have attended a Texas University of community college and Have a student ID# (ACC counts),
    • Have a family member that banks with them already.
    • Are employed by a partner business
    • Pay the $20 membership fee
      • To open an account:
        • Only possible online at the moment 
        • Call  (512) 467-8080 and follow prompts for Spanish for assistance
        • If you do not have an SSI, an ITIN is required
        • Picture ID/Passport
        • The minimum deposit for saving is $5
        • The minimum deposit for checkings is $25

  • RBFC
    • Bank representative recommended calling (800) 580-3300 and following the prompts for Spanish. That way someone could walk the applicant through the online process.

Note: As a reminder, by sharing your financial account(s) you are giving UpTogether access to the following information related to account transactions:

  • Amount
  • Date
  • Location (for specific offline transactions)
  • Merchant name
  • Category (travel, shop, deposit, withdrawal, etc.)

You are also giving UpTogether access to the following information related to each shared account: 

  • Available balance

  • Current balance

  • Account type (savings, checking, loan, etc)

For security purposes, occasionally the third-party platform used to share this information with us will “unlink” your shared account(s). To continue sharing your account(s), you will need to link them again.
