What do I need to know about selecting the Virtual Card as my payment method?

The UpTogether Virtual Card is one of three options you will be offered when you apply for COVID-19 relief funds or set up your Personal Fund Account on your UpTogether member page.

Please note that when submitting a relief fund application, only one payment option can be selected. The payment option cannot be changed later. Be sure the payment method you choose, including the Virtual Card, is the best option for your needs.

If you selected the Virtual Card and your application is Paid, the card will be available on your dashboard and ready for immediate use. You will not need to activate your Virtual Card.

The Virtual Card can be used online at any site that accepts credit card payments. It can be used to pay bills, purchase items, and otherwise be used like any other credit card.

For use at the register, the Virtual Card can be linked to a phone cash app such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. Simply follow any instructions provided by a cash app to link your card (Please note that we cannot provide these instructions.) Once your Virtual Card is linked to a phone app, you will be able to use your card online and at any physical location.

It is important to note that the UpTogether Virtual Card is not a credit card or a debit card. It works more as a gift card, and because of this the card has some limitations.

The card does not come with an option for a PIN (personal information number). As a result, the card:

  • cannot be used to withdraw money at ATMs
  • cannot be used for cash-back at the register
  • cannot be used for money transfers. Money on your Virtual Card cannot be moved to a bank account or another card, and money cannot be added to your card.

The Virtual Card does not include a contact phone number or an option for checking your current balance. You can check your balance on the Payment Methods tab of your dashboard, but due to delays in information received from vendors and banks this may not always be the most current balance. We recommend you keep track of any purchases to maintain the most current balance.

If the phone containing your card information is lost or stolen, protecting the funds on the Virtual Card is your responsibility. Please contact the phone app company to cancel the card immediately. UpTogether cannot replace any money spent while the Virtual Card is lost or stolen, and unauthorized charges will have to be disputed directly with the vendor.
