Beware of Scams! Ways you can Guard Our Community!

At UpTogether, the safety and security of your personal information is very important to us and we want to help you keep it protected. By knowing what to watch out for, you can identify scam attempts before they happen. A common scam can show up as someone trying to impersonate us through emails and texts in an attempt to gain access to your personal information.  As part of our commitment to help keep you safe online, we have a few tips we’d like to share:

HOW TO SPOT POTENTIAL EMAIL FRAUD:

  • The email sender is not from an @uptogether.org email address.
    • Be sure to look carefully as some scammers may use a similar name with a typo that’s easy to overlook.
  • It asks you to send an email with your personal information.
    • UpTogether has a secure online platform where you log in to update your personal information, such as your address or payment receipt preference.
  • It tells you not to call us for more information OR asks you to call a number to share your personal information.
  • It includes unusual URLs and links that take you to a third party, or appear to be altered.
  • It references our previous name, Family Independence Initiative (FII).

HOW TO SPOT A POTENTIAL TEXT MESSAGE SCAM:

  • The text / SMS notification is not from a familiar 10-digit UpTogether text number.
    • Be sure to look carefully as some scammers may use a similar name with a typo or provide slightly altered contact information that’s easy to overlook.
  • Paste the phone number into an online search and review whether the number has been previously reported as a scam.
  • It asks you to send a text response with your personal information.
    • UpTogether has a secure online platform where you log in to update your personal information, such as your address or payment receipt preference.
  • It directs you to a fake website or instructs you to call a random phone number to provide passwords, PINs, or bank account information.
